Seasonality in Tourism: Do Senior Programs Mitigate It?

2021

Seasonality is a widely recognised and accredited phenomenon known to cause an imbalance in tourism activity throughout the year, prompting tourist destinations, both public and private, to consider how best to plan the use of their resources. One way of mitigating the economic imbalances that seasonality can cause is to find strategies for seasonal adjustment, such as travel programmes aimed at the elderly. This paper analyses the seasonality of tourism activity in some EU countries, and in particular in Spain. Different indicators are used to compare the results and carry out a sensitivity analysis. The study then focuses on tourism programmes for the elderly in Spain to see whether this …

Measuring Seasonality: Performance of Accommodation Establishments in Sicily through the analysis of Occupancy Rates

2011

Tourism, more than other fields, needs to be managed. As such, the provision of reliable information and adequate tools is one of the major challenges to monitor and to manage tourism destinations. Sicily (Italy) seems to have a great potential coming from its tourism resources, and most of the recent development programs have been focused on tourism. In line with the world’s trend, tourism in Sicily faced a growth in terms of overnight stays, from about 9 millions in 1994, to more than 14 millions in 2007. The regional expenditure in tourism from 1996 to 2006 was of euro 785 millions (Federalberghi, 2007), which ranks Sicily as the second region in Italy for tourism expenditure, in the yea…

Seasonal pattern and amplitude: a logical framework to analyse seasonality in tourism. An application to bed occupancy in Sicilian hotels

2011

Many studies have investigated seasonality in tourism in terms of its causes and impacts, from both theoretical and applied perspectives. However, the definition of seasonality and, most of all, its application and measurement have not received the same degree of attention. In recognizing that seasonality has two main facets – pattern and amplitude – this paper critically examines the main seasonality measures proposed in the tourism literature, classifying them according to their properties and their most appropriate use. The framework then proposed is used to analyse a standard and comparable efficiency measure, such as the bed occupancy rate of Sicilian accommodation establishments, pla…

CLUSTERING OF TOURISM PATTERNS WITH SELF-ORGANIZING MAPS: THE CASE OF SICILY

2023

In this paper the Self-Organizing Map algorithm is used for studying whether and which tourism flows in Sicily are synchronized, i.e. which flows show similar patterns in time and space, if any. Synchrony hunting was performed for domestic and international tourists both on a yearly and monthly basis. Local tourism, meaning the holidays spent in Sicily by residents in the island, is also considered but on a yearly basis only. The analysis makes use of time series representing the number of overnight stays in Sicily over the period 2013-2019. Results provide evidence for a domestic market overall more synchronized than the international one, both in time and space. Spatiotemporal patterns f…

Seasonality and Tourism

2017

Seasonality is one of the key distinctive features of tourism-related phenomena. Seasonality in tourism is characterized by regular and rather predictable changes over time of tourismrelated aggregates (arrivals and overnight stays in accommodation establishments, hotels’ occupancy rates, traffic on highways and airports, lodging and transportation prices, etc.), which recur every year. Seasonal fluctuations in travel and tourism demand are relevant both for the travel and tourism industries and for destination managers. Causes, impacts, and policy implications are described as well as measurement challenges and proposals.

A Dynamic Analysis of Tourism Determinants in Sicily

2015

This study provides an initial analysis of the key determinants of tourism in Sicily. In doing so, it responds to the general lack of a scientific approach in the study and management of tourism in Sicily. By mixing a gravity approach and system dynamics methodology, the attractiveness of Sicily is examined, taking into account both structural and promotional aspects that might affect tourism demand. The results strongly suggest that the island's natural and cultural resources, the road infrastructure and the urban environment are important determinants of tourism demand in Sicily. The findings may be useful for local authorities involved in the development of tourism, and represent a star…
